Dermatology Times published an article yesterday expressing a link between atopic dermatitis and cardiovascular disease. According to their study:
- Study: 387,439 atopic eczema patients were matched to 1,528,477 patients who didn’t have AD
- The study took place in May 2018
- Severe atopic dermatitis patients were 20% more likely to have a stroke
- 40-50% likelihood of myocardial infarction, unstable angina, atrial fibrillation, and cardiovascular death
- 70% more likely to suffer from heart failure
“These factors may be more prevalent in patients with atopic eczema and could therefore contribute to an increased risk of cardiovascular outcomes,” [authors] wrote.
Although this is only one study, it shouldn’t be taken lightly as HEART DISEASE IS THE NUMBER 1 KILLER IN AMERICA. Additionally, it is the leading cause of death for males in the UK according to a 2015 chart.
Advice: For those of us suffering from atopic dermatitis / severe eczema, it’s best to make sure adding heart screenings to your annual checkup.
