Supplements…Are we being scammed?

Supplements…Are we being scammed?

I’ve always been skeptical of supplements and multi-vitamins, especially after my co-worker told me she takes about 20-30 supplements a day. I remember asking her why she takes so many to which she stated, “When you get older, you’ll understand.” Meh, something always seems fishy about these supplements. I’m not saying all supplements are bad, but there does seem to be an underlying scheme.

PBS Frontline collaborated with The New York Times to investigate these companies… here’s how it all went down.

PBS – Contacted supplement manufacturers.
Why – Wanted proof that their labels were accurate. Wanted certificated of analysis from indie parties.

Frontline – Investigated outbreaks of disease, tied to contaminated vitamins / fat-burning supplements.
Why – A case where 70% of people taking a supplement had liver damage. Lots of supplements don’t have the right about that is promised on the label and is falsely advertising.

**Results – 90% of companies didn’t respond. 90% OF COMPANIES DIDN’T RESPOND!!!!
This has garnered the attention of the Justice Department, retailers and everyday people. Buyer beware!
